SENATE IN ROWDY SESSION OVER AMAECHI

The senate broke out into a rowdy session on Wednesday after George Sekibo, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator from Rivers east, presented a petition to the senate against Rotimi Amaechi. Amaechi is one of the ministerial nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari. In the petition submitted on behalf of the three senators from the state, Sekibo accused Amaechi of fraud and corruption. As he rose to present the petition, some senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) shouted him down, chorousing “no, no, no”, “dead on arrival.” A shouting match then ensued between the PDP and APC senators and it took the intervention of Olusola Adeyeye (chief whip) to quell the melee.

On Tuesday, TheCable reported that senators opposed to the inclusion of Amaechi’s name in the ministerial list might stage a protest. Amaechi’s case is akin to that of Musiliu Obanikoro whose nomination as minister was opposed by senators from his state, Lagos. But on the day of his screening, former Senate President David Mark asked him to simply take a “bow and go” amid protests from APC senators.
