FEYI AGAGU RECOUNTS PLANE CRASH EXPERIENCE

Feyi Agagu attended International School
(University of Ibadan, UI); then proceeded to
study Mechanical Engineering at UI but didn’t
finish there before he went abroad to do
Computer Science at Tuskegee University where
he graduated with a first-class degree in
Computer Science. He proceeded to the
University of California where he had a
distinction in Master’s degree in Software
Engineering.
HOW IT HAPPENED :
We were all awake. I don’t think anybody was
asleep after we boarded the flight. The first
person to board was Mr. Okusanya, the MIC
boss, followed by Deji Falae, Ondo State
commissioner and then me. Of course, Falae
and I were talking as we walked in. Mr.
Okusanya sat in row 2 or 3, Deji sat in 4 and I
sat in 5. I think the next person was Deji
Falae’s Special Adviser, he sat behind me. Femi,
my brother-in-law, walked in after me before
Falae’s SA but he went to the back and
everybody was trooping into the plane. Just
before we took off, I realised I was on the wings
of the plane and I don’t like sitting there. I just
got up and went to the back. I wouldn’t know
why. Nobody called me to go to the back. When
I got to the back, I saw my brother-in-law and
there was a seat beside him and I took it and
realised that we could strategise more on the
burial ceremony during the flight. We attempted
to taxi and we stopped just as we got on the
runway. The person sitting right to my left,
apparently the flight engineer, went to the
cockpit. That must have been the point when
the pilot and the co pilot were arguing whether
to fly or not. I can only assume he went to
convince them that the flight was okay, he
never came back to sit beside me. He took the
first row because Mr. Okusanya was in row 2.
Then we took off and shortly after, in five or
seven seconds, we crashed. Everybody was
awake. I remember up to the point of the crash,
I was still lucid then. Then I passed out. My
brother-in-law said he tried to wake me up
because he said he saw me move after the
crash but he couldn’t wake me. Three of us
were at the back – me, my brother-in-law and
the air hostess who was the only one behind
us. They tried to wake me up on time before the
plane exploded and I didn’t know how long I
passed out until I found myself in the hospital.
SOME PEOPLE DIED FOR YOU :
It is the people who reduce the work of God to
superstition that I feel sorry for. I just explained
the position we took in the plane which could
have been a factor; it is not just luck but grace.
In our society, there is almost no success
factor that people don’t tie superstition to.
When my father became governor of Ondo
State, superstition was tied to it. When he built
bridges, they said he wanted to bury people
there. Anybody that reduces the power of God
to superstition has a problem. For me, I know
who to give thanks to.Death does not have to
come from a plane crash; it could be through
something else.
The lady that was in the hospital with me for
the same injury, had been coming to take
morphine shots for 13 years. That was what I
took for just three weeks and I was okay. So, I
can only give thanks.
I didn’t sustain any major injury. I am here with
you hale and hearty. I used to play tennis, I
came back and I still play tennis. I still play
soccer which I used to do before the crash. Of
course, I didn’t walk out of the plane but I don’t
think I look like someone who just got out of a
car crash, let alone a plane crash.
HOW IS FLYING NOW :
Of course, it is still very difficult. My first local
trip was about a month ago when I made a trip
to Abuja and it was tough. Any sound or
sudden motion could be upsetting. It is going to
be something that is going to remain with me
for the rest of my life. In fact, if I could walk
from here to London or Abuja, I would take that
option but there is no other way to get there.

EKITI-UPDATE

AHEAD of June 21 Ekiti State gubernatorial election, the National leadership of the Peoples Democr
atic Party, PDP yesterday presented former governor of the state, Chief Ayo Fayose with the Certificate of Return as the party’s Standard bearer, just as he declared that twelve years after as governor, he has become wiser, more   responsible and disciplined now.
Fayose also disclosed that he had   told President Goodluck Jonathan never to consider him or any member of his family for federal appointment should he fail to wrest power from the incumbent governor of the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the June 21 guber poll and remove him.

The PDP candidate for the Ekiti State election   who stormed the Wadata Plaza, PDP National Secretariat to collect the certificate from PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu also boasted that with his emergence, the incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi will shed tears, adding he brought him and he would remove him as governor come June 21, adding that as a political lion, who has lived all his life in the trenches, his emergence was a threat to Governor Fayemi.
Fayose, who defeated thirteen other aspirants last Saturday to emerge the PDP flag-bearer, noted that he is optimstic  he would defeat Fayemi because he knew how he became the state governor in the first place, adding, “I won’t look for government appointment because if they appoint you today, you may be removed tomorrow.
I won’t ask the Federal Government for appointment if I fail to win this election. Let the Federal Government not consider me or any member of my family if I fail to send Fayemi packing. I’m sending Fayemi back to where he came from and we shall take over the Government House.”
Fayose also appealed to all he might have wronged in the past to find a place in their hearts to forgive him even as he assured them that he had learnt his lessons having gone into political hibernation for 12 years.
He pleaded   with the other 13 aspirants who   contested with him for the governorship ticket to put whatever grievance they have behind and join hands with him to ensure that PDP wins the state.
According to him, there was the need for reconciliation, even as he promised that he will do their bidding and that he only needed the governorship and will not contend for other positions.
“The way forward is that other aspirants should support me and work with me. It is their right to be angry and if I had lost, I will also be angry because is not easy to lose N11 million,” he said.
Speaking earlier, the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Ahmadu Adamu Mua’zu, while handing over the Certificate of Return to Fayose, reminded him of the need to share positions among loyal party members to ensure equity and justice and cautioned aspirants on the platform of the party to work with the people at the grass root for their electoral victories instead of putting their hopes in their political god-fathers.
Mu’azu assured that his leadership would ensure reconciliation of the aggrieved members just as he expressed optimism that the PDP would take over Ekiti Government House after the June 12 governorship election, adding that there was no godfatherism in PDP.

We can’t stop Fayose from contesting for Ekiti governorship – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said that although it is prosecuting Ayo Fayose for fraud, it cannot stop him from contesting for the Ekiti governorship poll.
Mr. Fayose on Saturday emerged the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the June governorship election in Ekiti. He is being prosecuted by the EFCC for allegedly stealing over N400 million of state funds during his first stint as governor, 2003-2006.
The Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, told journalists on Thursday that only the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had the right to decide who was eligible to contest elections in Nigeria.
Mr. Uwujaren while fielding question from journalists in Abuja said the EFCC was not saddled with the responsibility of clearing electoral candidates.
Mr. Uwujaren also spoke on the successful prosecution of a former Pension Account Director, Shuaibu Teidi. Mr. Teidi was convicted by Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja on March 4.
The pension fraudster was one of the accused persons charged with 22 counts of obtaining money under false pretence from the Federal Government, and concealing N18.3 billion.
He disclosed that Brifina Hotel, Durumi District, Abuja, belonging to Mr. Teidi, was forfeited to the Federal Government. The hotel was found to have been acquired through Mr. Teidi’s company, Badawulu Ventures, for N339 million with proceeds of the fraud. The request of forfeiture was granted by Justice Ademola after an interim request was secured form Justice Adamu Bello.
On asset recovered from a former Bayelsa State governor, Dieprieye Alamieyeseigha, Mr. Uwujaren reminded journalists that the then state governor, Timipre Sylva, received the asset from the then EFCC chairman, Farida Waziri.
The various asset which included, Chelsea Hotel, Abuja, were valued at £2, 000 (N543,000), $441,000 (N7.27 million), N3.1 billion and 7, 000 Euros. They were returned to the Bayelsa State government, the spokesperson said.
Mr. Uwujaren commended the Bayelsa State government for distancing itself from a case allegedly being planned to demand the whereabouts of the Alamieyeseigha asset from the EFCC.
Warning that the commission would not tolerate any form of attack on it operatives, the spokesperson also recounted that a suspect, Tajudeen Oluwanishola, trying to evade arrest on March 18, ran over an operative of the commission, Johnson Barde, at Gbagada Estate, Lagos.
Mr. Oluwanishola, who was later apprehended by the police, is being investigated for alleged internet banking fraud. The EFCC operative, Mr. Barde, was rushed to Military Hospital, Ikoyi where he was treated.
Mr. Uwujaren also noted that the EFCC had stepped up its game in the investigation of judicial officers. He said that a number of prominent officers of the judiciary were being quizzed while some others have been invited for interrogation.
He said it would be premature to give details of these investigations as most of them were mere allegations. He said the public would be briefed in due time when prima facie cases have been established.
Mr. Uwujaren also urged members of the public with useful information on one of the petrol subsidy suspects, Seun Ogunbambo, to contact any of the commission’s offices across Nigeria.
Mr. Ogunbambo, having failed to appear for trial after he was granted bail, was declared wanted by the commission along with his company, Nasaman Oil; and two other suspects, Christian Taylor and Mamman Nasir. They are all being tried for allegedly obtaining N5.64 billion from the Federal Government as Subsidy Petroleum Support Fund for the importation of over 61 million litres of Petroleum Motor Spirit, PMS.
Mr. Ogunbambo is also being tried for obtaining N610 million under false pretence.
Mr. Uwujaren also noted that the allegations against the former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, was complex and at the appropriate time, when the commission was done with its investigations, details would be made public

*** Nigerian Sex Workers Seek Recognition Of Trade ***

As Nigerian sex workers on Monday joined their counterparts in other countries of the world to mark the 14th International Sex Worker’s Rights Day they demanded legal recognition of their trade as a respectable profession.
The prostitutes who spoke to journalists in Lagos said it was high time Nigerian government granted them their due recognition.
They urged the government to recognize that as human beings there is need to keep body and soul going, saying the ‘profession’ should be considered legitimate enough to put a stop to its discrimination and stigmatisation.
A prostitute who gave her name as Jane said, “See, many people, including you, do not see us as human beings. In your mind, we are a condemned set of Nigerians who sell their bodies so cheaply, but that thought is not right,”
Angela her colleague, a 27-year-old who hailed from a southern part of country argued that they could decide to pay their taxes if the government recognizes their trade.
She said, “In some countries abroad, sex workers pay taxes. There is no discrimination, they can sue and even have streets, mainly in red light districts allocated to them to carry out their trades.
“But here in Nigeria, we are faced with rejection from the society, serious harassment by the police, and victimisation by our customers.
“You can imagine a customer who rushes into this place in a desperate bid to ease himself, jumps at one of us after a bargain and rides like a horse only to renege on the agreement on how much he should pay. If we have our rights, we could call for his arrest without shame or molestation from security agents and other Nigerians.”
For Judith her foray into prostitution was not a sudden flight saying circumstances beyond her control forced her into the trade.
She said many prostitutes had various reasons for taking up the “business.”
Judith said she had travelled out of the country primarily to hustle in Spain, “But I was deported even before reaching the place.
“It was a tough experience and I started sleeping with men as we moved from one country to another just to get money to survive. I stayed two months in Morocco gathering money, but just days to my entering Spain, I was caught with other 80 women and men and sent back to Nigeria.
“I am from Agbor in Delta State and couldn’t go back to my place because of the shame. So I took up residency in this place servicing men daily and making money. I am even more comfortable here now and I make good money, about N12,000 every week.”
