MIMIKO'S DEFECTION :: OLUSOLA OKE , JIMOH IBRAHIM ARE SABOTEURS…~Clark

A former Minister of Information and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Edwin Clark, on Tuesday accused the owner of the Energy Group of Companies, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim, and a former governorship candidate of the party in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke, of working against the defection of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State from the Labour Party to the PDP. Speaking during an audience with members of the South South PDP Integration Committee, led by Prof. Iya Abubakar, at his Abuja residence, the Ijaw leader described their actions as disloyal. The Ijaw national leader expressed dismay with the reception and attempted scuttling of Mimiko’s return to the party. He wondered what Ibrahim and Oke intended to gain by working against their party. Clark said: “There are members of this party who don’t want the Ondo State Governor, Chief Olusegun Mimiko, to come back to the PDP even when the policy of the party is to bring people into the party. “People like Jimoh Ibrahim and Chief Olusola Oke did everything within their powers to frustrate the decamping of Mimiko into the PDP. “This would be the second time that Chief Oke would be working against the decision of the party. “Remember that he went to court to challenge Mimiko’s election against the decision of the party not to do so. “He went as far as the Supreme Court where he lost. “On his own part, Jimoh Ibrahim was busy organising people to oppose Mimiko coming into the PDP. “This is not the attitude of a loyal party member. “Nobody is bigger than the party. “You are either in the party or you are out. “But you cannot be inside and be working against the interest of the party. “I think every responsible member of the party has a duty to work for the interest of the party, which is to bring in new members into the party and reconcile aggrieved members back into the fold. “Anything short of this is not acceptable.” Clark therefore urged the party to instil discipline to avoid a situation where members of the party are involved in actions that are against its general interest. On President Goodluck Jonathan’s reelection bid, he cited Section 37 (1b) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides: “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of the president if he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections.” Clark said Jonathan was eligible to contest in 2015 general elections. According to him: “If Jonathan contests and wins another four-year term in 2015, he would have self- succeeded himself as president for a cumulative period of nine years and 23 days.” Besides, Chief Clark argued that the provisions of the 1999 Constitution completely demolishes the argument canvassed by Dr. Umar Ardo in his letter to the party’s leadership, adding that Jonathan has only contested once for the office of president and the constitution guarantees him a second term. He added that what the constitution says is that a president or governor shall remain in office for a period of eight years after he has gone through two successive elections. Clark said: “There is nowhere in the constitution where it is stated that a period a president occupies office after the death or resignation of a predecessor will be counted first term in office. “The one year and 23 days of Umaru Yar’ Adua’s administration, which Jonathan served out, therefore seems to form the centrepiece of the writer’s argument to canvass for President Jonathan’s prevention from seeking a second term re-election. “This, again, is baseless and inconsequential as the unexpired term served out by the Vice President is duly provided for in the 1999 Constitution by virtue of Section
s 141 and 142. “It neither violates the constitution nor any known law in Nigeria. “This argument is worthless and amounts to flogging a dying horse. “The writer appears more like a man with a clear vision, yet requesting for a light to see clearly. “The one year and 23 days bears no relevance or effect on the two terms of eight years due for Jonathan.” Clark noted that section 137 (1) of the 1999 Constitution is very instructive as it unequivocally uses election as basis for the eligibility. It states: “A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if he has been elected to such office at any two previous election.” Abubakar expressed confidence that the PDP will win the 2015 general elections and form the government of the country. He disclosed that his Committee is working assiduously in reconciling aggrieved members back into the party as well as receiving new ones.

FAKE EFCC SYNDICATE NABBED IN ONDO

A deadly syndicate of fraudsters who virtually opened an office for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Akure, the Ondo State capital, from where they dispatch fake invitation letters to unsuspecting heads of government agencies purporting to be carrying out investigation activities against them, has been uncovered. The kingpin of the syndicate, one Olubunmo Olalekan, who is currently in EFCC custody in Abuja, was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, and handed over to the Commission. At the point of arrest, Olalekan who parades himself as a Principal Detective Superintendent of the EFCC, had in his possession fake letter head papers of the Commission, 30 GSM sim cards, assorted complimentary cards, a laptop computer and printer from where he churns out the fraudulent invitation letters. His modus operandi is to send out the bulk invitation letters to as many agencies as possible, via courier, claiming to have pending petitions alleging corruption against their heads. Investigations so far revealed that the suspect has written and dist
ributed over sixty letters purportedly from the Commission to several top officials of ministries, department and agencies. Among them are the chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Ibadan; Managing Director, NPDC Limited, Sapele Road, Benin City; Professor Idowu Odeyemi, Provost Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences, Jos; Managing Director/Chief Executive Office, Jebba Hydro Electric Plc, Jebba, Niger State; Medical Director, National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State; Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Provost Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State and a host of others. He would leave a GSM number in the letters asking the agency heads to contact a PDS Adeniyi. Those who fall for the scam are asked to pay money for the purported case against them to be dropped. The syndicate had gone to the extent of issuing clearance letters to those that met their terms. But some heads of agencies that are sure they had done nothing untoward to warrant investigation by the EFCC have been bold to contact the Commission, which was how Olalekan was nabbed. Dr. Osunyikanmu Pius, director of Technical Aids Corps, Abuja was one of the agency heads targeted by the scammer. But once he received the invitation letter with instruction to contact a PDS Adeniyi, Dr. Pius Osunyinkanmi alerted the Commission. He was encouraged to play along and consequently paid the sum of N2 million into an Access Bank Account as demanded by the suspect to throw the case. A sting operation was planned, but Olalekan was arrested by men of the DSS before he could draw the money. Investigation so far revealed that the suspect who operates from his home in Shagari Extension, Akure, Ondo State has obtained millions of naira from victims who were willing to pay his price to escape the ordeal of a phantom investigation. Unknown to them, they had enriched a fraudster. Olalekan is not the lone player in this scheme of trickery. His two accomplices, a certain Ahaji Yero and one Mr Bako are currently at large even as the EFCC launches a massive manhunt to bring them to justice. Olalekan’s arrest represents a major breakthrough in the effort of the EFCC to break the ring of fraudsters that specializes in impersonating officials of the agency to dupe unsuspecting members of the public. The Commission has repeatedly warned members of the public to be wary of invitation letters purportedly emanating from the agency with instructions to contact any supposed official through a GSM line. No authentic EFCC invitation letter will request anybody to contact an official by telephone. Rather, you are asked to report at an EFCC office to be interviewed by a designated officer. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious invitation to the Commission’s Department of Internal Affairs by email: DIA@EFCCNIGERIA.ORG or call this number: 09- 9044758 between 8am and 5pm weekdays only

$1.69M FRAUD CHARGE , COURT DISCHARGED FRED AJUDUA

Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday freed one time Lagos Socialite & business man, Fred Ajudua, on charges of defrauding two Dutch businessmen of $1.69 million. Ajudua was brought before the court by the EFCC in 2003 and was standing trial alongside one Alex Okorie. The EFCC had alleged that the defendants deceived the victims by claiming that the money was for sundry payments to various government officials. The EFCC further alleged that the defendants claimed that the payments would help them to facilitate a contract worth $18 million on behalf of the complainants. The matter had suffered a series of adjournments owing to the failure of the EFCC to produce some key foreign witnesses in the matter. While the matter lasted, Ajudua, who is said to have been critically ill, was refused bail by the court. At Wednesday’s proceeding, the EFCC again failed to produce any of the foreign witnesses in the matter. Counsel to the EFCC, Mrs E.A Sanusi, told the court that some of the principal witnesses in the matter had vehemently refused to come to Nigerian to give evidence in the matter sighting the recent outbreak of Ebola in the country. She said that in the circumstance, the EFCC had no other option but to ask for the withdrawal of the charge. Following this submission, Justice Kudirat Ajose subsequently ordered that Ajudua be discharged of the charges. However, a sister case, where Ajudua is accused of allegedly defrauding Former Chief of Army Staff, Gen Ishaya Bamaiyi, of $8.4m while they were both in custody at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos between November 2004 and June 2005, is still pending before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the same Lagos court.
